Born on the Jersey shore, a block from the ocean. Went to Pittsburgh and began a career in alternative journalism, writing about art, music, science, education, culture, love. Spent a couple years at WQED, right down the hall from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, and learned that Fred had words of wisdom for grownups, too: "Our world hangs like a magnificent jewel in the vastness of space. Every one of us is a part of that jewel, a facet of that jewel. And in the perspective of infinity, our differences are infinitesimal. We are intimately related. May we never even pretend that we are not." Adopted that credo as my driving philosophy in launching a new career as a science fiction/fantasy professional. Spent several years revitalizing Weird Tales, the world's first fantasy magazine, as its editorial & creative director; won the magazine its very first Hugo Award! Now the author of a fun-but-thoughtful new book, GEEK WISDOM: The Sacred Teachings of Nerd Culture.
